Tell Your Rosary Story

11 Oct

photo Is there a rosary that has special meaning for you? When I was a child, my grandmother carried a sterling silver rosary.  She kept it in a blue velvet zippered pouch which she carried in her purse.  Today, I have a collection of over 900 rosaries which I exhibit in churches and schools but my grandmother’s rosary is the most cherished.

Mother Teresa received many beautiful gifts as she traveled the world.  Her personal rosary, however, was made of  Job’s Tears, a seed of her native India.

Knotted Cord Rosary for Processions

4 Oct

Pioknotted2 The knotted cord, one of the oldest forms of the rosary, has seen a recent surge in popularity.  The National Centre for Padre Pio in Barto, Pennsylvania, has a large knotted cord rosary that is used in processions.  Three to four adults carry it during processions.

During Pope Francis’ visit to America, an exhibit to Mary, Undoer of Knots, was built outside Philadelphia’s Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.  Mary’s title as Undoer of Knots came from a 16th century painting showing that Mary can ease the burdens in our lives.  Because Pope Francis has a special fondness for this painting and devotion, he has encouraged everyone to pray to Mary because she can undo the knots that burden our lives.   Pope Francis stopped at the  grotto of knots in Philadelphia on his way to celebrate an outdoor mass on Sunday, September 27, 2015.
