Philadelphia’s Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul

29 Jun

The feast of Saints Peter and Paul is celebrated on June 29.  One of  the best places to honor and remember these saints is in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.   Pope Francis said mass here in September 2015 when he visited Philadelphia during the World Meeting of Families.

A unique portrait of the Holy Family was commissioned for the World Meeting of Families and hung on the altar during the Papal Mass.  This portrait shows an extended family.  In addition to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the portrait also includes Mary’s parents, St. Anne and St. Joachim.  The gold trim in the painting is similar to the gold trim of the altar where the painting hung.  The painting is the work of Pennsylvania artist, Neilson Carlin.

To learn more about antique and unusual rosaries, read The Rosary Collector’s Guide by Gloria Brady Hoffner and Helen Hoffner.  This hardcover, 152 page reference book, published by Schiffer Publishing, has over 200 color photographs of rosaries, crosses, crucifixes, and center medals ranging from those once owned by England’s King Henry VIII to those honoring Pope Francis.  The book explains the many rosary variations approved by the Roman Catholic Church.  The Rosary Collector’s Guide is available in Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, the Catholic Faith Store Online, Adoremus, and other book stores, religious article stores, and online sellers.

I didn’t know that. June 29 is also my friend June’s birthday who passed away a few years ago. I should have walked to the cathedral to say a prayer for her.
