Prior to the 1960s, the Catholic Church allowed only boys to serve on the altar and assist priests during mass.  Altar Boys won the respect of their peers and the honor of wearing a cassock.

altarboy6  Made in 1963, the Altar Boy Rosary and Prayer Book was a popular gift for those who had passed the requirements for service on the altar.  It was produced immediately before the sweeping changes of Vatican II that allowed girls to serve on the altar.

The prayer book had a plastic cover with a  compartment on the front to hold the rosary.    The back cover held a holy card with a prayer for the altar boy.
