On September 23, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, known to many as Padre Pio. St. Pio was born on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy. He was educated by tutors and ordained a priest in 1910. On September 20, 1918, the five wounds of Christ’s passion appeared on his body, making him the first priest to bear the stigmata of Christ.

Rosary collectors can determine the age of a rosary by the way in which this holy man is named. Rosaries made before 1999 refer to him as Padre Pio. Rosaries made between 1999 and 2002 refer to him as Blessed Padre Pio.

Padre Pio was named a saint on June 16, 2002. Rosaries made after 2002 refer to him as St. Pio ( or St.Pius) of Pietrelcina.

We are fortunate to have many rosaries honoring St. Pio in our collection. Some of our rosaries were made before 1999 and refer to him as Padre Pio. Padre Pio was beatified in 1999. Rosaries made between 1999 and 2002 refer to him as Blessed Padre Pio. He was canonized in 2002. Rosaries made after 2002 use the name, St. Pio of Pietrelcina.
