The Ghirelli Rosary of Pope Francis

Pope Francis Rosary by Ghirelli

Tradition dictates that religious articles bearing a pope’s image should only be made and sold during his papacy. This tradition, as well as the popularity of Pope Francis, has led many collectors to seek rosaries bearing his likeness. Fortunately, the Ghirelli Company, known for rosaries of exceptional quality, has created a rosary to honor Pope Francis.

Sold in the United States by the Catholic Faith Store, the Pope Francis Rosary has distinctive features including a pastoral crucifix and a center medal with a color picture of Pope Francis on one side and his coat of arms on the reverse.

The teardrop shaped center medal has a color picture of Pope Francis.

The reverse of the center medal shows the Papal Coat of Arms of Pope Francis. The keys at the top represent the keys of St. Peter and symbolize the pope’s role as leader of the church. The mitre honors Pope Benedict XVI who added this symbol to papal crests in 2005. The shield in the center holds additional images of importance to Pope Francis. At the center top is the symbol of his religious order, the Society of Jesus. Pope Francis was ordained in this order in 1969.

Including this symbol shows the pope’s devotion to Jesus and to his order. To the bottom left of the shield is a star to symbolize the Virgin Mary. Earlier designs used a five point star. When concerns arose that a five point star has been associated with military actions, it was replaced with an eight point star. The vine to the right represents St. Joseph. By including symbols for Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the pope shows his devotion to the holy family. The phrase “Miserando atque eligendo” written across the bottom is a reminder to “Have Mercy”. In all his dealings, Pope Francis has shown that he practices mercy and encourages others to do the same.

The rosary’s smooth oblong white beads are reminders of purity and add to the reverential quality.
