Pope Francis: The Rosary is Medicine for the Heart

29 Jun

On November 17, 2013, Pope Francis appeared in St. Peter’s Square for his traditional Sunday appearance. On this occasion, however, he had a special gift for his audience. Appearing at the window, he held up a small white box that resembled a medicine box. He jokingly asked the crowd, “Is the pope a pharmacist?”. Then he said, ” I want to recommend some medicine for all of you”. The pope explained that recitation of the rosary can be good medicine for the heart.

Pope Francis told the audience that they would each receive a replica of his medicine box. Led by Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, director of papal charities, volunteers walked among the crowd to distribute the cherished boxes which contained several items.

The front and back of the box had an anatomical drawing of a human heart. Inside was a rosary of wooden beads, a Divine Mercy holy card, and an instruction sheet for praying written in the style of a medical prescription.

While some might smile at the notion that the rosary is “good for the heart”, scientific evidence supports the pope’s claim. Recent studies have proven that reciting the rosary can improve heart and lung functions and relieve stress. Dr. Luciano Bernardi, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pavia in Italy, has proven these benefits and has also discovered that the repetition of the rosary has special benefits for patients diagnosed with heart failure.

The medicine box set distributed by Pope Francis on November 17, 2013, has already become a highly desired item for rosary collectors and one that will stand the test of time.
